                    Writer. Nobel Prize- and Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist. Professor Emerita at Princeton University. Among her best known novels are The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon and Beloved. Work explores the African-American experience. Also deals with themes of womanhood, the supernatural, folklore, identity, and friendship. Her novels are known for their epic themes, vivid dialogue and richly detailed black characters. Has also written plays, libretto, children's literature, and non-fiction.
