Paul C. Johnson, professor of history and of Afroamerican and African studies at University of Michigan, is interested in hybrid forms of agency formed in the Americas, especially in Brazil and the Caribbean, as well as the uses of secrecy in religions and in questions of law and the state. 

His books include Secrets, Gossip, and Gods: The Transformation of Brazilian Candomblé, Diaspora Conversions: Black Carib Religion and the Recovery of Africa, and Automatic Religion: Near Human Agents of Brazil and France. He is also an editor of Comparative Studies of Society and History.
