Julie Mehretu is a New York City-based visual artist who has transformed the parameters of abstract painting, drawing, and printmaking during the course of a career now in its third decade. Mehretu’s work melds the language of abstraction with the task of history painting: through her mark-making she has constructed a voice that overrides the supposed boundary between non-representational painting and painting with deeply thought-through sociopolitical concerns. The urgency of the global challenges facing us today infuses both the tone and the content of her densely complex compositions, often created on a monumental scale.
