Harvey Fineberg's career spans academia, science and health policy and philanthropy. As president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, he has overseen major scientific philanthropy investments in fundamental discovery, environmental conservation and patient-centered healthcare. Earlier, as provost of Harvard University, Fineberg helped shape the institution’s intellectual future. Across these roles, he has consistently championed science that crosses boundaries and addresses long-term societal needs. As president of the Institute of Medicine, Fineberg led its transformation into the National Çï¿ûÊÓƵ of Medicine, strengthening its role within the National Academies and amplifying its impact on health policy. During the earliest stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, he chaired the standing committee that provided real-time, evidence-based guidance to policymakers confronting unprecedented uncertainty.

Beyond U.S. borders, his leadership as former board chair of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and current chair of the China Medical Board reflects his belief that science, education and health are powerful instruments of diplomacy and international cooperation.

Dr. Fineberg's medical research has focused on global health, assessment of medical technology, evaluation and use of vaccines, and dissemination of medical innovations.
