Andrea Gamarnik contributes uniquely and rigorously to RNA virology, focusing on the most important insect-borne pathogen, dengue virus. She uses an armamentarium of tools in RNA biochemistry and virology, and has shown surprising requirements in chemical modifications, structures and topologies of viral RNA genomes. Attuned to viral biology, she determinedly compares viral biochemistry and genetics during infections of humans and the carrier mosquitos. She chooses difficult paths in her career as well, bringing her mechanistic approach to a country in which dengue and other flaviviruses are endemic. A gifted speaker, she is an important educator and ambassador between these worlds.
